Protecting a Handy Bench

April is Minwax National Woodworking Month®! To celebrate, wood finishing expert Bruce Johnson has written a few blog posts to inspire you to tackle a DIY project this month. Don’t forget to download the Minwax National Woodworking Month® mail-in rebate form, you could save up to $17 on select Minwax® products.

Several years ago I made this simple, but sturdy bench for our mudroom, appropriately named, for this is where we kick off our muddy shoes and boots, and where Jasper and Daisy come in to nap after a dip in the creek.

As you can see, the interior finish I had originally applied eventually began to show some water marks, letting me know it needed some help.

Thinking this would be a good weekend DIY project, I started by lightly sanding the old finish, both to remove the water stain and to abrade the surface so that my new clear finish would cling to it.

After wiping off the sanding dust, I brushed on a coat of clear Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane, designed for either interior or exterior use on furniture subjected to excessive sunlight or moisture.

Now that the Helmsman has dried, I can use our bench either inside our mudroom or outside, knowing that the new finish will protect it against wet gloves, dog leashes, and muddy boots.

Until next time,

Thanks for stopping by!

Bruce
