A Tip For Cherrywood

By

I was in my workshop getting some sample boards ready for my talk “My Five Favorite Woods — And How To Finish Them” and I was applying Wipe-On Poly to cherry and thought it would be good to pass along this tip: use a folded piece of #600-grit sandpaper as your applicator. Rub the Wipe-On Poly into the wood in the direction of the grain, then wipe off any excess oil, and let dry. Repeat two more times and your finish will be as smooth as glass!

Until next time,

Thanks for stopping by!

I have been following your site for a while and have enjoyed learning from you and your wife. Could you tell me if the wipe on poly will turn yellow after a time?

The oil based Wipe-On Poly starts and remains slightly amber but since it is such a thin coat it is barely noticeable on wood. However, if applied over a white or similar stain, you might notice it. In that case I would recommend the Water Based Wipe-On Poly, as it is clear since it contains no mineral spirits. Thanks for reading, Etta! -Bruce
