A Miniature Holiday Tree

By

My sons will soon be coming home for the holidays, so they won’t bother with a life-size Christmas tree for their apartments. In my local craft store this miniature unfinished tree gave me the idea of sending them each a tree they can easily set up — and use year after year.

This is the perfect project for Minwax® “Emerald” Express Color, a combination water-based stain and finish in a convenient tube. Normally I would rub it on with a cloth, but since trees have texture, I chose a sea sponge as my applicator.

I first started lightly sponging the Express Color on the back for two reasons: (1.) I wanted to practice, and (2.) if placed in a window, the back will also be visible. Quick Tip: use a folded paper towel to dab off the excess stain before applying the sponge to the wood.

The back of the tree came pre-drilled for a short string of lights, which were easy to install.

I added some inexpensive holiday stickers to compliment the Emerald stain, which I purposely applied slightly unevenly with the sea sponge to imitate a real tree.

A few holiday decorations completed this table-top Christmas tree — which I will now dismantle, pack up, and send off, while I get to work on a second one!

Until next time,

Thanks for stopping by!
