Here is one of my latest ‘Just Ask Bruce’ videos where I explain how to pick the right Minwax® clear protective finish for your project. Watch as I demonstrate a variety of clear finishes including Fast-Drying Polyurethane, Polycrylic® Protective Finish, Wipe-On Poly & Helmsman® Spar Urethane.
I was asked which protective finish was best for a beginner’s DIY project. There are a few different options to choose from when sealing wood, but it’s important to note that every wood project needs a clear protective finish, whether or not the wood has been stained. A clear finish not only protects the wood, but also keeps it looking great through years of wear and tear.
Fast-Drying Polyurethane is a good choice for most projects that need a simple finish. Wipe-On Poly is great for applying quick coats without the need for a brush. If your wood will be exposed to the elements outdoors, use Helmsman Spar Urethane, which blocks sunlight, water, and temperature changes.
Keep in mind that most clear finishes add a slight amber tint to the wood. If you need a true clear coat, try Minwax Polycrylic, a clear, water-based finish for fast drying and easy cleanup.
In case you’re thinking about — or already have — created a Halloween centerpiece using a real pumpkin, beware! Pumpkins are a natural fruit which means they continue to ripen (and rotten) as soon as you bring one home. And if you don’t take some precautions, your table could end up next week with a stain like this ….
The best way to enjoy your Halloween pumpkin is to first set it on a small plate, which you can disguise with dried leaves, acorns, pine needles, and colorful corn. Your table remains protected while you move on to your next holiday project!

In the event that the operation, security, or administration of the Contest is impaired in any way for any reason, Sponsor may, in its sole discretion, either (a) suspend the Contest to address the impairment and then resume the Contest in a manner that best conforms to the spirit of these Official Rules, or (b) cancel the Contest and award the prizes at random from among the correct eligible Entries received up to the time of the impairment. The failure of Sponsor to comply with any provision of these Official Rules due to an act of God, hurricane, war, fire, riot, earthquake, terrorism, act of public enemies, actions of governmental authorities outside of the control of Sponsor, or other “force majeure” event will not be considered a breach of these Official Rules. I was in my local craft store this week to pick up some stencils when I spotted a new item: these over-sized unfinished wood letters. Naturally, I couldn’t resist, so I grabbed a pair for Alexandra, my assistant, plus a letter for my wife Leigh Ann’s last name and one for mine and brought them back to my garage workshop.
I preferred wood tone colors for ours, so Leigh Ann selected Mahogany for her “H” and I picked Chestnut for my “J,” both in the convenient Minwax® Wood Finishing Cloths: water-based stain and finish already added to a durable cloth.
Leigh Ann came up with the idea of overlapping our two initials, and I glued on our house number before displaying it outside our door. Our letters are protected from the sun and rain, but if you needed extra protection, I would recommend also applying a coat of Minwax® Water Based Helmsman® Spar Urethane.
And check back next week to see what Alexandra does with her letters ….
